These are also lessons in the book which are presented in the video. Highly recommended to all artists. I studied art in a special program at the high school level, and studied Independent Illustration at the college level. I still felt that there were things I could learn to improve my composition and painting though, and I thought this book sounded promising. I am happy to say that I learned a lot from this book.

It examines how to structure your paintings properly by planning, starting with an armature, figuring out the movement and how you want to guide the viewer's eye through the painting, and taking control of the direction of the painting from the very beginning. You start with your composition and structure figured out already, and then begin painting the big masses, and build your painting step by step, always making sure that you are not straying from your composition. Only at the end do you worry about details, which is something I have always wanted to get into too soon. It looks at color as well, and making sure that your colors are balanced properly, and working with the composition. The book also comes with a DVD, which is about 40 minutes long, and divided into two parts.

In the first part, the author goes through a series of paintings that are discussed in the book, and shows what their armature is, and how the composition works. He then shows how slight changes can disrupt the paintings, and weaken them. The idea is to help us train our eyes so we can use this knowledge when doing our own paintings. In the second part, the same paintings are displayed, along with the changes that weaken them, but without the author's commentary.

It is suggested that we watch and find the problems ourselves as they appear on the various paintings. I thought it was an excellent book, with a lot of concrete knowledge that I can now use to improve my paintings. I would highly recommend it. The author works with oils, but the information discussed about composition, armatures, and even the proper balancing of colors applies to acrylics, watercolors, or any kind of painting or art.
